OUR STORY

Our mission is to train people in the art of sewing….

Both machine and hand skills, from beginners to intermediate and eventually to master practitioner level. This particular skill has been missing from the school curriculum for many years and there is a strong demand for sewing practitioners within the fashion garment industry. Workshops will also be running for 1 or 2 days these will include:- Ragdoll making with Julie Gallagher and Corset workshop by Janet Robinson and puppet making with Colin Bean Taster days will be planned throughout June/July these will include Beginner Certificate awarded by City & Guilds (these are run with no obligation to enroll for the level 1 sewing course.) The School was started by Partners Janet Robinson PGDHE Founder of The Robing Room also based at Evegate and Julie Gallagher BA Hons of The Robing Room and resident in Ashford. The School will have the facilities to teach 8 students at one time and can offer both day and evening class times.

MEET THE TEAM

JANET Partner – Born in Folkestone and now living in Kent I studied at The London college of Fashion which was part of my study program when I was awarded a 3 year Apprenticeship with a Folkestone based supplier to Marks & Spencer. After completing my apprenticeship in the 1970’s I worked my way up to Workroom Designer/Manager and when the company closed in the 1980’s I travelled and worked in London designing for High street stores such as Next. Studying for my Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education for Fashion Teaching I graduated in 2004 and have taught in Degree Courses at London College of Fashion, University of Arts Rochester, University of Arts Bournemouth and University of Kent. During my teaching career I have also worked with some well-established and brilliant Fashion designers such as Basso & Brooke, Harriet’s Muse and London Denim and I still maintain active association with the Fashion Industry, working as head of patterns for Fashion Capital in 2014. JULIE – She who sews …….. Partner – I have lived in Kent for most of my adult life. After studying Fashion at Canterbury Art College in the late 1970s, I worked for a tailors in Savile Row, doing finishing work. Later, whilst raising my three children during the 1980s and 1990s I worked from home as a part-time dressmaker and in 1999 joined the designer Colin Bean for 6 years at The Little Black Dress, in Faversham. In 2006 I studied for a BA with in Fashion & Textiles with the University of Kent.   After graduating, I was employed as a technician on the Fashion & Textile courses at West Kent College in Tonbridge, gaining a lot of satisfaction from helping students to realise their design aims. It feels right to be setting up the School of Stitch with Janet, sharing our passion for all things fabric and fashion with those who also feel the need to sew!

Rosie James Raised in Liverpool, living in Kent I am a textile artist, using the sewing machine as a drawing tool. I studied Textiles at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design in Farnham, and for a while had a business making handprinted scarves and cushions from my workshop in Chatham Dockyard. After doing an MA at Goldsmiths, London in Fine Art Textiles my work became more art based, linking stitching and screen-printing to create large scale wall-based pieces. My work hangs in hotels and private homes all over the world. In 2014 my first book came out “StitchDraw” published by Batsford.
